A short fanfare written during my time as Kaitito Pāpori, Auckland Philharmonia Communities Composer, and premiered at the APO Discovery concert on 1 May 2019 to a capacity audience of secondary school students, on a programme with Mozart, Beethoven and Stravinsky. Tianyi Lu conducted. Burt Munro's son John was in the hall.

Burt Munro spent twenty years in a shed in Invercargill modifying a 1920 Indian Scout, took it to the Bonneville Salt Flats ten times, and in 1967, aged 68 on a 47 year old machine, set a land speed record that still stands. Ingenuity, stubbornness and optimism in roughly equal measure. Good material for a piece.

The music runs on relentless energy and mechanical drive. Short rhythmic ideas keep recurring, interrupted by a jolt but always coming back, with metallic percussion holding the pulse underneath. Ideas establish themselves and then head somewhere else entirely, as if Burt had thought "ah bugger, scrap that, I've got a better one". It resolves at the end into something like cohesion and accomplishment.
