"Broken Record" film

Broken Record Screen Shot 1 Morgan's best man tries to help him fulfill his destiny on his last day of freedom.

I always look forward to the Rialto 48Hour Film Competition and the chance to work with the guys at Sideways Productions.

After getting through the ongoing nightmare that we may be tasked with a 'musical' - I was relieved that the team got given 'film within a film' as the genre.

They did a really great job and ended up getting the audience choice award at the heats -  but unfortunately no further successes this year.

I had fun exploring an assortment of VSL strings, a shaker or two and a "tweed picked synth" for good measure.

Here's how the music looked at my end:

Broken Record Music

I arranged the 14-or-so cues from the soundtrack into a single piece of music which you can listen to here:

Preparing for Neil Finn's live webcast

Last Thursday and Friday I prepared Victoria Kelly's stunning arrangements for Neil Finn's upcoming acoustic tour "Neil Finn: An Intimate Night of Dizzy Heights" with shows in London, New York and LA. I first worked on these in February for his "Dizzy Heights" album are they are now re-written for a live 9-piece string section.

Neil, Victoria and the strings did a live webcast from Roundhead Studios featuring four of the songs as a sneak preview. Here's some of the music ready to go:

"Giants of the Sea" by Mark Vanilau

Mark Vanilau \"Giants of the Sea\"In October last year I had the massive pleasure of writing the string arrangement for Mark Vanilau's track "Giants of the Sea", released TODAY! The track is produced by Warren Maxwell and strings recorded by Nic Manders. Never heard of him? No one is perfect!

Mark Vanilau has worked with New Zealand's best - he's a regular member of Dave Dobbyn's band, he played on Hollie Smith's album, performed with Rikki Gooch in Eru Dangerspiel and has been in bands with Ladi 6 and Scribe. He recently played his first show with Warren Maxwell and Louis Baker.

Vanilau is a multi-instrumentalist with a distinctive, velveteen voice. His dynamic live set takes twists and turns through soul soundscapes he describes as "Pink Floyd soul music".
